Call of the Night

Call of the Night is an anime about Kou Yamori, a middle school student who has trouble understanding love. He stops attending school, finding little reason to conform to the norms. Due to insomnia, he begins to wander the streets at night. He meets a girl named Nazuna Nanakusa who claims people can't sleep due to dissatisfaction with their day.¹

Nazuna invites Kou over to her place to help him with his insomnia. Kou and Nazuna share a futon after she convinces him to. Feeling uneasy, Kou pretends to fall asleep and Nazuna bites his neck. She is a vampire. Having been biten, Kou wonders why isn't also a vampire. He learns that in order to become a vampire, you must be bitten by someone he loves. As a result, he is determined to fall in love with Nazuna and become a vampire.¹

Immodesty

In this anime, both men and women are seen immodestly. There is "male rear nudity", "plenty of...shots focusing on characters private parts", and "scenes depicting girls bathing".² Additionally, a woman's nipples, several upskirt shots, and other revealing clothing is seen.² I don't know about you, but when I hear something like this, my first thought it not, "This is a good show for me to watch."

When we compare these things with the scriptures, we find a vast difference. Where this anime says revealing clothes are fine, God says to dress modestly. Where this show says it's okay for characters to express lust,² God says lust is a sin. These are just the basic contrasts we can draw.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Based on this scripture, we can already conclude that this anime is sinful. When women are commanded to be modest, yet women are immodest, then they are sinning. According to other scriptures, sinful content prohibits us from consuming the media.

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." (Psalm 101:3)

The things we see will affect us. Our standard of morality is the Lord Jesus Christ. None of us are perfect, but we should never make excuses for why we watch the sinful anime we do. This is another such show.

Vampires and Violence

One character has their arm "sliced off by a vampire".² Do you think that's something God enjoys? The same Lord who said His soul abhors those who love violence (Psalm 11:5) is the same God who we are to live for. Violence and gore is not something any Christian should involve themselves with. But that's not all.

Vampires. What are they? Demonic creatures? Humans who drink others' blood? I'm not sure which is worse, in both scenarios, a "vampire" does not exist, but is a sinful creature doing sinful things. For example, let's assume a vampire is just a human. What do the scriptures say about consuming blood?

"But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat." (Genesis 9:4, emphasis mine)

"But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood." (Acts 15:20, emphasis mine)

Even under the Mosaic law, blood consumption was strictly forbidden. Yet an anime about a blood-consuming human (or maybe a devil, who knows?) is somehow okay in the eyes of God? I think not. Our Lord has been clear about what He expects from His sons and daughters, it would be wise for us to heed His commands.

Conclusion

Because of these things—the immodesty and vampires—we must conclude that the Lord would not be okay with His children watching this anime. I pray that you would consider what the words of God have to say about this topic.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
