Food for the Soul

Mako Kawai, an introverted college student, loves to watch cooking videos and creating the dishes she learns. Due to her introverted nature, Mako fears trying new things or making friends. Shinon Ogawa, a childhood friend of Mako's reunites with her in college, bringing Mako into her friend group.¹

Shinon, along with her friends Tsutsuji Higa and Kurea Furutachi, plan to start the Food Culture Research Club. They invite Mako to join. Though she declines initially, she realizes this may be a way for her to better her life, get friends, and eat food with them.¹

Immodesty

Though, in comparison with other anime, this anime seems clean, nonetheless, there is immodesty. In this show, characters wear short skirts.² This is not biblical. In Isaiah 47:1-3, the Bible defines the thigh as part of a person's nakedness.

"[1] Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. [2] Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. [3] Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man." (Isaiah 47:1-3)

It may be unpopular, but it is the truth. You could be covered on every inch of your body, but the moment part of a person's thigh is uncovered, they are considered naked. Upon this basis, the characters in this anime are naked, according to the Bible.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Mako herself wears gold, which is not scriptural for women to do.³ When women are commanded to be modest, then you're going to depict them immodestly, you've violated the scriptural command. This is a reason why we cannot watch this show and not be sinning (Psalm 101:3).

A Strange Monster

There is a character in this show named Mokotaro.⁴ What this character actually is is not clear, as it's a yellow blob with gloves and two leaves coming from its head. It seems pretty clear that if such a creature did exist in our world, it would be something demonic.

Now, in Japanese, its is spelled「モコ太郎」. The first two characters are the katakana for mo and ko, but it's the next two characters that are interesting. The character 太 means "big" or "great" and 郎 is a counter for sons. So this name is a mix of "cute" and "traditionally masculine."

I mention this because Mokotaro is voiced by a woman. There seems to be some mixing of masculine and feminine in order to make Mokotaro. God made male and female, but this "cute" demonic, gender-mixing creature is trying to break that gender separation the Lord has made.

Conclusion

While there may not be much to talk about concerning this show, there is still content in it contrary to the Bible and God's holiness. Honestly, it is unfortunate that even a show with a clean plot cannot seem to free itself from the sinful grasps of the flesh. I wish I could say this anime is okay to consume, but I simply cannot, for it violates biblical modesty.

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Me I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at what makes me ...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...
