Record of Ragnarok

Every thousand years, the gods convene to decide whether to destroy mankind. This time, the gods decide it is time to destroy all humans. However, one of the Valkyries of Valhalla, Brunhilde, proposes enacting Ragnarök. Ragnarök is a series of one-on-one battles in which thirteen humans and thirteen deities battle each other. Due to the gods' pride, they accept, and Brunhilde must gather humanity's strongest for Ragnarök.¹

False Deities

The first thing you likely noticed is the so-called "gods" from other world religions. This anime presents these deities to us and conveniently ignores the God of the scriptures. This is blasphemy! Essentially, they say, "All these gods are real... but Jehovah God is not." They take several things from the Bible (which we will get into), but then they ignore the Lord altogether.

This is not an atheistic show, but it is an anti-Jehovah one. As Christians, we know, however, that the Lord He is God! Listen to what the scriptures tell us:

"Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him." (Deuteronomy 4:35)

Isaiah tells us again that there is no God but the LORD—Jehovah God. "I am [Jehovah], and there is none else, there is no God beside me" (Isaiah 45:5). Jehovah alone is God. The very idea that there could be another god is wicked! Yet this show is full of false deities, of idols, for the Bible says:

"For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens." (Psalm 96:5)

Of course, they can present Beelzebub as a god,² but they can never show the Lord reigning from His rightful place. Beelzebub, or Baalzebub, is the "lord of flies." He is mentioned in the Bible, synonymous with Satan, as the chief of devils.

There is a story in the Bible where the prophet Elijah is sent to the king of Samaria. This king was sick, and he had sent to "enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron" (2 Kings 1:6). What wickedness to turn to Satan over Jehovah!

"Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing." (Deuteronomy 7:26)

To even allow these false gods into your house is wicked. Yet, that's not all. This anime is very soft on Satan.

Corrupted Fall

We know of the fall in the garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and their eyes were opened. This anime covers that story, but man isn't at fault for his sin. Instead, man was expelled after the serpent tried to rape Eve and she rejected him. After being rejected, he accused her of eating the fruit from the tree.

Eve denied, but when she is condemned and sentenced to leave Eden, Adam comes in and eats the fruit, so they are exiled together.

Remember what I said about the anime being soft on Satan? Not only did it make up an outrageous story, but according to this anime, Satan isn't involved at all!³ The scriptures say that the serpent was possessed of Satan, but this "serpent" is not.

This is a completely different story from that which we read in the Bible. In the scriptures, Eve chose to eat of the fruit. In the Bible, the serpent deceived Eve, but she made a choice. But in this anime, the gods unjustly, incorrectly, judge Eve for something she had not done. And in so doing, Adam is presented as a hero of sorts for eating the fruit!

Violence

As should be obvious by now, this show is violent. Common Sense Media states there is a lot of "fantasy violence", including "dismemberment" and "decapitation".⁴ People are seen being eaten by giants and other forms of violence.⁴ One comment on IMDb says, "Massive bloodshed."⁵

This is contrary to all that is holy. Violence is not something that the Lord takes delight in. The scriptures are extremely clear about what God thinks of those who enjoy violence. Psalm 11:5 tells us, "him that loveth violence his [that is, God's] soul hateth." Unless you want the Lord's soul to hate you, you should not find pleasure and enjoyment in violence.

Many will say, "I simply like to watch good overcome evil," attempting to justify their enjoyment of the violence. It doesn't! This anime is not about good and evil. It is a world where there is nothing but evil. There is no reason a believer should consume such harmful media.

Sexual Content

For anyone even vaguely familiar with the mythologies of the world, it should not surprise us that there is a lot of sexual content in this anime. A character is seen naked from the backside,⁴ women's breasts are exposed,⁵ and men's nakedness is also seen⁵.

I'm sure many of us have seen those lessons at church, teachers showing various images depicting biblical events to keep kids' attention. One common one is the story of Adam and Eve, and their nakedness is seen (regardless of them being positioned to keep their genitalia out of sight). The biblical definition of nakedness is the whole pelvic region, including the waist and thigh (Exodus 28:42, Isaiah 47:1-3).

Just like the aforementioned lessons, this anime depicts Adam and Eve immodestly, with their nakedness exposed, with only their genitalia covered. Using the scriptures' definition, we should not be consuming media with people whose nakedness is uncovered.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel..." (1 Timothy 2:9a)

We Christians are to be different from the world. You can't be different from the world when you consume media full of sexual content!

Profanity

Profanity is another problem with this anime.⁽⁴⁾⁽⁵⁾ Scripture tells us, explicitly, to put the froward and perverse mouths away, to put them, it says, far from you (Proverbs 4:24)! In no way is the perverse language in this show pleasing to God.

"[23] Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. [24] Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:23-24)

Jehovah God is clear: He does not want His children listening to the perverse and froward mouth. As His children, we should obey Him. Let's endeavor to put this anime, with its terrible language, far away from us!

Alcohol

Lastly, I would like to consider the alcoholism in this show. IMDb says there is alcohol usage.⁵ The Bible, however, is clear about what God thinks of alcohol. Aaron and his sons were commanded not to drink wine when they entered the tabernacle because it was unholy (Leviticus 10:8-11).

Yet this profane thing, something the Lord did not want in His tabernacle, is going to be among the "gods" of this anime? Jehovah God is holy, and this show is not. The Bible states, "Look not thou upon the wine when it is red" (Proverbs 23:31).

Conclusion

This anime is blasphemous! The Lord is against all those who dare to mock Him. The scriptures say:

"[7] Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. [8] For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." (Galatians 6:7-8)

Those who sow to the flesh (like the creators of this anime) will reap corruption. But let us, as believers in Jehovah God, not "be partaker[s] of other men's sins" (1 Timothy 5:22). We should keep ourselves from the "unfruitful works of darkness" (Ephesians 5:11).

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Me I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at what makes me ...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Pokémon

Pokémon was a show many grew up watching. People will certainly feel personally attacked when I speak of the wicked things found in the show. Many have spoken on Pokémon long before me, and they have been ridiculed—I am not expecting any other response. Immodesty Just like the average anime in which there are beach episodes, the woman are in bikinis.¹ On top of this, woman are in tight-fitting and revealing clothing. "Various female characters-notably the recurring character of Jessie-wear clothing that is revealing, tight-fitting, or both." ¹ "As is typical with anime, female characters wear short skirts, breast-enhancing tops."² Bikinis, short skirts, tight clothing, etc. are anything but modest. It's utter filth. As Paul relays to us: "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9) When a show has immodesty in it, espe...
