Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World

In the world, there is a force called Astral power that mages use. However, the Empire oppresses any of these astral mages due to the destructive power they wield. The mages created their own nation, the Nebulis Sovereignty. The two countries have been at war for more than a century.¹

Iska, a knight imprisoned for freeing a mage, is released on the condition that he will take down the "Ice Calamity Witch." Iska desires to see the war end peacefully. The aforementioned "Ice Calamity Witch" is Aliceliese Nebulis, who, coincidentally, also wants peace.¹

Sexual Content

There are several scenes in this anime where a woman is seen naked.² Additionally, for this show, Crunchyroll lists suggestive dialogue.³ Is this really what a believer in the Lord Jesus is supposed to watch? The Bible tells us to think on pure things, not these sexual, perverted things.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8)

Our culture today is saturated with sexual media and scandalous clothing. We've gotten to the point where anime, like this one, where short skirts are worn, and women's breasts are exposed, is the norm. This ought not be so! We Christians should be different from this world—watching different things, saying different things, doing different things!

Violence

This show takes place in the midst of war. There is fighting and battling in this show. Violence is never something that should be entertainment. There are several reasons for this. For one, the Lord hates those who love violence (Psalm 11:5). Secondly, when there is fighting, there are only two options: multiple parties are in the wrong, or only one is in the wrong. That may seem simple, but that means in violent encounters, there's always at least one side in sin.

In this anime, that side would be the mages, which we will get into in the next section. Regardless of who is right or wrong, the fact remains that the Scriptures command us to put not wickedness before our eyes.

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." (Psalm 101:3)

To watch this anime would be to contradict the clear biblical commands regarding violence and the things we are to consume.

Witchcraft is Okay

The show's protagonist is Iska, who is sympathetic towards the mages of the Nebulis Sovereignty. He seeks to end the war and let the mages live freely. The other main character is Aliceliese Nebulis, an actual mage.

Mages are no different from a witch or wizard. They are people who involve themselves with magic/witchcraft. The Scriptures are clear about what God thinks about magic practitioners. He says that witchcraft is one of the fruits of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-20). He also called for Israel to slaughter every witch (Exodus 22:18).

Yet, this anime wants us to believe it is just fine to be a witch? Content aside, the very idea this show pushes is that magic, and such is all fine and good and ought to be defended!

Conclusion

Therefore, when we examine this anime in light of the Lord's commandments, it is revealed to be sinful. Christians should not fill their minds with this type of media, this sinful content that we've been commanded not to put before ourselves! May we endeavor to live more Christlike, instead of consuming wicked anime!

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
