Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Bell Cranel, a naïve young man, wants to become the greatest adventurer. After meeting the goddess Hestia, his hope might just come true. He goes into the Dungeon in the city of Orario, where dangers await him. How will he traverse a world where man and gods work together, and where the Dungeon threatens his very life?¹

False Gods and Demonic Creatures, and Magic

Bell meets the goddess named Hestia. This is the Greek goddess of the home. What is Bell doing, working with a false deity? The scriptures straightly command us to have nothing to do with false gods.

"[20] But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. [21] Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:20-21)

False gods are none other than devils. It is very dangerous for a person to have anything to do with a devilish false god. Stay away! That is the Lord's warning to His children! However, it just continues to get worse.

This anime has many "monsters" in the Dungeon, including minotaurs and hell hounds.² These creatures are demonic imaginations, abominations man has crafted as an affront against their Creator. They've taken the man, made in the image of God, and committed abomination by confusing what the Lord created.

Next, I want to address the anime's magical elements. All three of these topics can really be rolled into a single one, since they are all of the same nature. People, in this show, use magic to fight against the aforementioned minotaurs, hell hounds, and other like monsters. Magic, witchcraft, is devilish. In Deuteronomy 18, the Lord extensively lists various forms of magic and condemns them.

Sexual Content

When a person first begins watching anime, they quickly learn that these shows are chock-full of sexualized content, in dialogue, actions, and clothing (or the lack thereof). Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? proves faithful to that broad assessment of anime. Crunchyroll lists sexualized imagery and dialogue in this show.³

Women wear short, revealing, form-fitting clothing.² The breasts and nakedness of female characters are seen in various degrees throughout the anime.² Bathing scenes also appear, with naked characters.⁴ There are many sexual innuendos (to put it lightly), where women do things around Bell that they ought not.²

"[27] For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. [28] She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men." (Proverbs 23:27-28)

Isn't this perfectly applicable here? These women are increasing the transgressors among men. This is their intentional sexual behavior. In the verse before, it says, "My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways" (Proverbs 23:26).

It is so obvious that God desires us to keep our eyes on His way. The reason begins with "For" in verse 27. "For a whore is a deep ditch". The characters in this anime are, dare I say, whores—their behavior is not something we are to place our eyes on.

Alcoholism

In this show, characters "spend a lot of time at" a tavern.² People drink alcohol and get drunk.² Scripture tells us that both of these things are sinful. It says not to even look at alcohol (Proverbs 23:31), much less drink and get drunk off it. Drunkenness is a work of the flesh. Paul says that "they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:21).

The fleshly man is extremely wicked, and drunkenness is one of the things the flesh desires. The flesh craves it, but the Lord is holy, and He commands us to be holy (1 Peter 1:16). When we have been commanded to look not upon the wine, then we are to follow and obey.

Conclusion

As you can plainly see, this anime is evil and wicked. I suppose if you want to answer the question, "Is it wrong to try and pick up girls in a dungeon?", it would be, "Yes." This show is full of demonic activity and sexual content, something no Christian should fill their mind with. According to the Bible, we are to think on things that are pure and of good report—filling your mind with evil is to disobey the Lord in this regard.

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Me I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at what makes me ...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...
