Long ago, witches would sometimes marry their familiars, which resulted in the birth of a race of ogres. From this descent came Morihito Otogi, who appeared human despite possessing superhuman strength. A young witch, Nico Wakatsuki, is Morihito's childhood friend. She had to leave Morihito when she went to the Witches' Holy Land to receive an education.¹
Nico returns before Morihito's first year of high school, desiring to make him her familiar. However, that's not all, since she also loves him, of course, Morihito is blind to her true feelings. Thus begins the daily life of Morihito and Nico, living under the same roof.¹
Witchcraft and Divination
I think the name, Witch Watch, should give you an idea of what is wrong with this anime. Witchcraft is forbidden numerous times throughout the Scriptures, and as such, it is considered evil and wicked. This show has witchcraft, which is bad enough. However, the protagonist uses magic!²
"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king." (1 Samuel 15:23)
As I often say in connection with magic, the Bible tells us that Saul rebelled against God, and he lost his kingdom as a result. But Samuel told him before he lost his kingdom that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. If rebellion and witchcraft are equated in severity, then witchcraft is enough to lose a kingdom over.
The Lord takes this very seriously. With that in mind, magic/witchcraft is not something that we, as Christians, are to consume or be involved with!
"Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver." (Acts 19:19)
According to this verse, many Ephesians who believed on Christ took the witchcraft books they had previously used and burned them. How much more should we "burn" anime that actually shows and performs witchcraft?
Nakedness
According to IMDb, a female character is shown in her undergarments after a "mishap in magic".³ This is highly immodest! The Bible is abundantly clear in its instruction that women are to be properly covered. Scripturally, "nakedness" consists of loins and thighs (Isaiah 47:1-3), so a female being seen in her undergarments is immodest.
"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)
This is the go-to verse in the Bible on the topic of modesty. It is not rocket science to recognize that if Witch Watch has nudity, we should not be consuming it.
Profanity
Another aspect of this anime that is contra-Bible is the language found within it. Crunchyroll lists profanity as one of its content warnings.⁴ In all honesty, I don't get why any Christian would want to listen to such speech.
Paul explicitly says that evil communications corrupt our good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). With that in mind, it seems that we are to be careful about what we listen to. We should not watch anime that has such perverse language, the same form of language we are told to avoid (Proverbs 4:24).
Conclusion
Therefore, there is no reason for a believer in God to consume, much less enjoy, watching a witch (a pun attempt on the anime's name). Jehovah God tells us that we are to choose one or the other—to either partake of His table or to partake of the table of devils (1 Corinthians 10:21). Let us strive to partake of His table.
