Rock is a Lady's Modesty

The title "Noble Maiden" is awarded to students of the Oushin Girls' Academy who "embody the ideal Japanese woman of culture and refinement."¹ When a rich real estate agent remarried, Lilisa Suzunomiya became his step-daughter. She is determined to prove that even commoners like herself can be noble. However, Lilisa is having a hard time letting go of her love for rock music, despite trying to appear dignified.¹

This all comes to an end when she meets a fellow student named Otoha Kurogane. Lilisa found her in an abandoned school building and learned that Otoha was a skilled drummer. The pair lives a double life as they embrace their musical desires.¹

Profanity

This anime uses terrible language.² There is nothing about a profane mouth that is godly or holy. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The Scriptures tell us that we are to let "no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth" (Ephesians 4:29).

With this in mind, we Christians should not take pleasure in watching shows or anime with this evil speech in them. We are told in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that evil communications will corrupt our good manners. Everything that you put into your mind will influence you, and the Lord tells us that perverse lifestyles will corrupt us. That is why it is so important that we guard ourselves from consuming sinful media.

Additionally, the Proverbs explicitly charge us to keep this sort of speech away from ourselves.

"Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:24)

In context, this verse comes right after a charge to keep our hearts pure. And later, the passage says that we are to move our foot from evil. Thus, when a show contains profanity, we are not to watch it. This is one reason why Rock is a Lady's Modesty is not an anime we are allowed to consume.

Immodesty

This anime has immodesty in it as well. According to IMDb, a female character's breasts are exposed.² Additionally, several characters wear clothing that reveals their cleavages and/or thighs. Scripturally, this is immodest.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Considering what the Bible says plainly in this passage, we cannot, at the same time, believe it is fine for these people to dress the way they do. And why would we want our entertainment to be filled with sinful dress? That doesn't make sense, and God tells us that we aren't.

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." (Psalm 101:3)

It is so ironic that the show is called Rock is a Lady's Modesty but is full of immodesty!

Conclusion

With that said, I think it is clear what the Bible has to say about this anime's contents and why it is contrary to His Word. Please, heed the Lord and His commands. Obey Him and put your foot far away from this show!

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
