The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil

Heaven and hell are at war, and hell is fighting a losing battle. Hell, attempting to stay afloat, sends Akutsu Masatora, a demon, to Earth with the task of recruiting someone into Hell's army who can lead them to victory over Heaven. Akutsu meets a transfer student, Lily Amane, whom he believes would be a good candidate for that role.¹ He fell head over heels in love with Amane, but she reveals herself as a demon-hunting angel²—one of those they are fighting against.¹ Amane defeats him in battle but spares his life to keep him as her slave, using a collar that forces him to obey.²

Sadism and Violence

First up, it is worth mentioning that Amane is a "sadistic, undercover angel who hunts demons."² Sadism is having a "delight in cruelty".³ Using a biblical word, she is malicious. The Scriptures clearly state that this is a sin.

"Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers," (Romans 1:29)

Being a sadist is contrary to the Bible and contrary to God and His will. Why would we ever think it is okay to take pleasure in this? In fact, the Bible goes so far as to say that God hates people who feel this way!

"The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth." (Psalm 11:5)

Instead of spending our time watching a show that the Lord condemns, how about we choose to fill our minds with things that become of saints?

Speaking of violence, there are other forms of violence. For example, as mentioned in the first paragraph of this post, there was a battle that took place between Akutsu and Amane. They were fighting! One could argue that fighting a demon is an example of biblical morality. However, a demon is still evil, and there is always at least one guilty party in battles.

Immodesty

Crunchyroll states that this anime contains "Sexualized Imagery" and "Suggestive Dialogue".⁴ Characters wear short skirts, and a female's cleavage is seen. When the world says that this show has immodesty, you know it is not good.

The world does not follow the scriptural standard for modesty, but when they even say an anime has immodesty, pay attention and hearken.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

The Bible defines nakedness as including the loins and thighs (Exodus 28:42, Isaiah 47:1-3), not just genitalia. So when characters are wearing short skirts, biblically, they are naked.

Profanity

Another issue with The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil is the presence of corrupt speech.⁴ As Christians, we know that certain language does not bring pleasure to God. There are certain things that we know are wrong. So why would we want to fill our minds with such language?

"[23] Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. [24] Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:23-24)

A pure heart comes from us staying away from perverse or froward speech. When we put profane language into our minds, our hearts become corrupted and impure.

The Angel that Fell

Part of this show's plot is that this angel and demon begin to fall in love.² Perhaps you have caught the play on words in this section's title, of falling in love and falling from holiness. Amane is an angel who is in fellowship with evil, who is developing romantic feelings for the unholy.

"For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;" (2 peter 2:4)

Angels have moral agency, the ability to make choices right or wrong. They can sin, and those who followed Satan sinned and were cast out. Amane is sinning by being in fellowship with wickedness.

"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:21)

Whose table is Amane partaking of? Is it Jehovah's? No, she is drinking of the cup of devils and partaking of their table. Christians, please consider: Is this truly what we should be filling our minds with?

Conclusion

In fact, she is a foolish angel dancing with Satan. Are the fools who you want to influence you? If not, you need to obey the Bible:

"Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge." (Proverbs 14:7)

May the Lord give us all wisdom and understanding. May He help us, His children, to obey His Word and forsake those things that are wicked (Psalm 101:3).

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners." (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Kenyon Bowers I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at wha...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Christian Anime Podcast Exposed

"Fiction doesn't condone sin." - Kenyon Bowers There is a YouTuber with a couple thousand subscribers known as "Christian Anime Podcast." He claims he is "The leading Christian voice on AniTube"¹ and promotes what he calls "Christian anime." However, there are some things we can learn and reasons to avoid him. This is not meant to just attack him personally, but rather to inform and to show the results of his stance. First , he labels wicked things "Christian." There are so many examples of this. I would like to reference a specific one, however. " That Time My Wife Reincarnated as an Elementary Schooler is a Christian anime."² What does he mean that such an anime is a Christian anime? Neither reincarnation/possession nor borderline pedophilia are Christian. This just shows he will label wicked things as "Christian" because "it has a good lesson you can get from it." If that's merely all it take...
