A Bridge to the Starry Skies

Kazuma Hoshino and his family are moving to a rural town. The two brothers, Kazuma and Ayumu, are sent ahead while their parents finish up business in the city. As such, the duo is heading towards the Yorozuyo Inn, the place they will be staying. This doesn't go well, however, as the two get lost, and Ayumu's hat is stolen by an animal. In attempting to retrieve the hat, Kazuma meets a woman named Ui, who helps him back to the bus stop.¹

One issue, though: On the way, he accidentally falls and ends up kissing Ui. Ibuki, Ui's friend, kicks Kazuma and sends him off. Unfortunately for him, these two girls are his new classmates.¹

Sexual Content and Immodest Dress

There is immodesty in A Bridge to the Starry Skies.² For example, the female characters are seen in immodest, short dresses/skirts. Additionally, some of their clothing is form-fitting. A female character's undergarments are seen.³ The Lord forbids His people from dressing this way. In fact, He warns us against those who do, and tells us to let our eyes follow God, and not on the immodest harlots of the world.

"[25] My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. [26] For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit." (Proverbs 23:25-26)

The Bible says that we can observe God's ways with our eyes. By necessity of that statement, it is possible to, with our eyes, violate the ways of the LORD. This anime is in straightforward conflict with the Scriptures—that should be obvious. The most commonly cited verse on this topic, and rightfully so, is 1 Timothy 2:9, which says:

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

When one considers biblical commands, they contrast starkly with the morality portrayed in this anime, even in just the clothing!

Evil Communications

Crunchyroll lists profanity as one of its content warnings for this anime.² I have no clue what is said, nor do I want to, but when a worldly organization recognizes that there is bad language, one can only imagine that it contradicts biblical standards to a great extent.

Does the Bible reveal anything related to protecting our ears from hearing evil things? Actually, yes! Let's take a look at a passage from Proverbs.

"[23] Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. [24] Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:23-24)

The Lord says that we are to keep (or guard) our hearts, because that is where the goings out of life come from. Christ reiterated this in the Gospels when He said, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies" (Matthew 15:19).

One way to keep our hearts pure is to, as the Proverb says, "Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." This is God's answer on how to have a pure heart. Yet Christians, more often than not, want to avoid this command and consume media with bad words and improper speech.

Shintoism

It is worth mentioning that one of the characters, Madoka Koumoto, is a miko.⁴ Miko are priestesses, or shrine maidens, in the Shinto religion. This reveals a simple fact: A Bridge to the Starry Skies is not lifting up Jehovah God, nor even attempting to.

"[20] But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. [21] Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:20-21)

You must make up your choice. Christ said that you are either for or against Him (Matthew 12:30). I want you to think: Who are you for? If for Christ, why would you watch this show and partake of the table of devils?

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." (Ephesians 5:11)

Conclusion

The weight of evidence is too great to attempt to redeem this anime. A Bridge to the Starry Skies is more of a bridge to sinful content. Dear Christian reader, please consider what the Scriptures have said about sin. Paul tells us that evil communications (manners of living) corrupt good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). I adjure you, take heed to the Word of God!

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
