Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister

This anime is about a man named Uryuu Kamihate, who became an atheist after his mother passed away. His desire is to become a doctor; hence, he is very studious, striving to gain admission to Kyoto University. In an attempt to move away from the orphanage, he moves in with the Amagami family in their Amagami Shrine.¹

He is now living in a household with three sisters, who are the shrine maidens. There's an issue, however. Chidori Amagami, the head priest, tells Uryuu that he must marry one of the three sisters to protect the shrine's future. How will this atheist, living in a Shinto shrine, manage?¹

Sexual Content

There's both sexual imagery and sexual speech in this anime.² According to IMDb, women are seen in their undergarments several times, alongside "accidental groping" and cleavage.³ These things are not alright. God says that women are to be modestly dressed, which means we are not to watch shows where they're not!

"[9] In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; [10] But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

In the same way that it is displeasing to the LORD when you watch magic or alcoholism, it is against Him to watch immodesty. Let's keep ourselves away from such content.

"Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee." (Proverbs 4:25)

Body-Swapping

In part of this show, Uryuu and Yuna Amagami (one of the shrine maidens) switch bodies.⁽³⁾⁽⁴⁾ This is completely fictional, but it does relay one simple truth: this author does not care about the Scriptures. The Bible says that God made us "fearfully and wonderfully" (Psalm 139:14). To even attempt to say that one could switch bodies is just demonic and evil.

In a way, it could be seen as a form of "transgenderism." That is, portraying a man in a woman's body and vice versa. No aspect of this would please or glorify the Lord. God put you, me, and everyone else in the body He desired them to be in.

Shintoism

A major part of this story is its setting around a Shinto shrine. The three Amagami sisters are miko. Miko are shrine maidens, or "priestesses." For this reason, many Shintoist practices are taking place. Certain aspects of such things are not wrong. For example, a red skirt and white top (typical miko attire) is not inherently bad, but when mixed with Shinto worship, it is devil worship.

"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:21)

You must choose one or the other: either Jehovah God or the "gods" (神 kami) of Shinto. Deuteronomy 7:26 tells us that we are to not bring abominations into our house, but to abhor them. This is later reemphasized by Paul in Romans 12:9, where he says, "Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."

Conclusion

As can be seen, Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister is not a godly anime. With the promotion of Shinto beliefs in this show, how could we truly find this God-honoring? The Bible explicitly tells us that we are to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness" (Ephesians 5:11). Sadly, too many Christians allow themselves to consume such wicked media.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
