Pseudo Harem

Pseudo Harem (Japanese: 疑似ハーレム Giji Hāremu) is an anime about two high school students: Eiji and Rin, a member of the school's drama club. Eiji has a desire to have his own harem, and Rin decides to help him achieve this goal. Instead of him getting an actual harem, Rin uses her acting skills to play the personalities of multiple women, creating a fake harem for Eiji. Meanwhile, "the real Rin Nanakura tries her best to win Eiji's heart."¹

Immodesty

"Arguably one of the cleanest anime ever"²

When one sees a statement like this, the question is raised: "According to whom?" We can claim that Pseudo Harem is a clean show, but according to whom? And not only who, but we must also inquire about that person's standards that lead them to make such a claim.

Another entry on IMDb mentions a female character in a swimsuit. From this, we can conclude that this "cleanest anime ever" title is from a worldly perspective, not a biblical one. Whether it's braids, swimsuits, or otherwise, there is still immodesty in this show!³

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Likewise, Crunchyroll states that there is some suggestive dialogue.⁴ Scripture tells us that we are to stay away from both the immodestly dressed woman and the perverse lips.

"A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit." (Proverbs 15:4)

As such, we ought to avoid any form of anime with these characteristics.

Harem

This anime, in essence, teaches that the desire for a harem is not bad, even though it is. While many people's fleshly natures desire such a thing, there is nothing godly about the desire. "It's just a pretend harem—it's not really a harem!" So it's alright to pretend to sin?

Is it okay to pretend to kill someone? Is it alright to pretend to drink alcohol or to be drunk? No, of course not, and it's also not okay to pretend to be a harem. The Bible teaches us that God made humans as male and female, and that a man would "leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife [singular]" (Genesis 2:24).

There should never be any form of "harem" at all—fake or real.

Conclusion

Even this seemingly "wholesome" anime actually contains things that are contrary to the Bible. However, even these shows are often based on wrong things. Additionally, even though they may not be trying to make the anime immodest, this is a major issue with going along with the world's standard.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
