The Republic of San Magnolia claims that they have no casualties, but that is propaganda.¹ The truth is that their "unmanned" drones are lies.² They are manned by Eighty-Sixers, people considered to be inferior and "less than human".² The anime is about Vladilena Milizé, the newly assigned Spearhead squadron "Handler," who seeks to fight against Eighty-Six discrimination, and Shinei Nouzen, captain of said squadron, who "insists on shouldering the names and wishes of his fallen comrades."¹
Nudity and Other Immodesty
86 has immodesty in it. According to Crunchyroll, this includes nudity, which is why they list the anime as 16+.² We also learn that women's cleavages are seen, and women are seen showering.³ Vladilena wears a short skirt.⁴ Does this seem like something God desires His children to watch?
"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)
Which is right? The anime with immodest women or the Bible? The Scriptures are supposed to be the Christian's authority. Therefore, when there is a show with values incompatible with the Word of God, we are to reject it (Ephesians 5:11)!
If that wasn't bad enough, being a military-focused show, several women wear military uniforms, including pants.⁵ There is no distinction between the sexes!
"¶ The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God." (Deuteronomy 22:5)
This idea is reemphasized by Paul (1 Corinthians 11), so it is not an Old Testament exclusive idea. The Bible is clear that men and women are not supposed to wear the same clothing, yet this anime portrays it as perfectly fine and acceptable.
Violence and War
Being a show set in the midst of war, there is obviously violence. As with any war, there is always at least one side that is at fault and is sinning. While many people have a fascination with battles and violence, the Scriptures reveal that God hates those who feel this way.
"The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth." (Psalm 11:5)
I do not want to be hated by the LORD, so I will, instead of enjoying violence, put it away from me. Additionally, there are instances where a man kills his fellow soldiers who are injured.³ Was it not God who told man, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13)? We should not place murder before our eyes!
As if that wasn't enough, there is an instance where a "character commits suicide to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy."³ While not exactly the same, this is vaguely similar to seppeku, a form of suicide to preserve one's honor. Suicide is contrary to the Bible. When John the Baptist said to do no violence to any man (Luke 3:14), he didn't only mean to other men. Is this anime really something we should spend our time consuming?
Profanity
Crunchyroll states that 86 contains improper language.² Because of this, there is no reason a believer should waste their time watching it. Paul warns us to be "not deceived" because "evil communications corrupt good manners" (1 Corinthians 15:33). When you intake content with this type of language, do not be surprised when your mind has become corrupt.
"Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:24)
This is a command straight from almighty God. He commands His children to put away the froward and perverse mouth from us. Not just away from us, but it says to put it far from us! To put something far from you is not to sit down and watch it on your devices.
Racism
A major aspect of this anime's plot is that people called the Eighty-Six are seen as mere animals, lesser than the pure "Alba."¹ However, Scripture reveals that God made "of one blood all nations of men" (Acts 17:26). To treat a person as if they were made in the image of God is contrary to the Bible.
And while Vladilena Milizé is trying to fight against the unjust oppression of the Eighty-Six, the truth is that the way they are treated in the show is contrary to biblical standards. For this reason, Christians shouldn't watch it.
Conclusion
When you consider the content that is found in this show, it is plain as day that 86 is not godly. It is full of racism, violence, and improper content. If we want to keep ourselves pure, we must avoid this anime and instead fill our minds with God-honoring media.
