Lycoris Recoil

Takina Inoue is part of an organization called Direct Attack (DA) that trains orphan girls to be assassins. This is their "Lycoris" program. Despite being an "exceptional Lycoris", Takina transfers out of Direct Attack due to disobeying orders. Now, she is an undercover café, LycoReco. Takina wishes to return to Direct Attack, feeling out of place. However, her new partner, Chisato Nishikigi, intends to show Takina that there is more to life than killing. She shows this by incapacitating terrorists, rather than killing them. Additionally, Chisato takes Takina to simply help people.¹

Inappropriate Clothing

This anime contains immodest content. For one, there are short skirts, as well as a character's undergarments, which are shown when her "skirt is lifted".² While one could argue that it's not as bad as other shows, where in Scripture does it say that a certain amount of sin is fine, and a certain amount is not? The Bible is clear that any is wrong. You can read more about how this argument doesn't work in my post The Slippery Slope of "Just One Scene".

Turning to the Bible, however, there is a very clear command given, forbidding women to wear immodest dress.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Since immodesty is wrong, we should not participate in its consumption.

Violence

Violence is a major issue with this show. Crunchyroll lists violence as one of its content warnings for the anime.³ According to IMDb and Common Sense Media:

"Multiple scenes of gun-fighting and terrorist events."

"Several dozen young women aged in their teens are killed in an explosion and by rapid gunfire."²

"The main characters are assassins regularly facing life-threatening danger. People (including civilians) receive death threats, are held hostage, and are kicked and beaten. Heavy gun violence, often resulting in many deaths. ... Terrorists open fire in public areas like train stations and city streets."⁴

Murder is a sin. All throughout the Bible, we are commanded not to kill/murder. For example, one of the Ten Commandments is, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13).

"[15] He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; [16] He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure." (Isaiah 33:15-16)

This passage says that if we want to dwell on high, we ought to shut our eyes to evil, not to look upon it. God says that He hates those who love violence (Psalm 11:5), which includes watching it for fun or entertainment. Now, that doesn't make it right to watch ever, but even more so if you're watching it with enjoyment.

Filth of the Mouth

Lycoris Recoil uses improper language as well.⁴ If we want to be close to God, to be living in accordance with His Word, then it is imperative that we forsake such evil. Perverseness in the tongue is a "breach in the spirit" (Proverbs 15:4).

"Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee." (Proverbs 4:24)

When we don't put away the froward and perverse mouth, that will corrupt our good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). Let's keep our manners pure and undefiled!

Conclusion

Based on these things, the conclusion seems obvious. Christians are not to consume this media. The LORD has revealed His Word to us; we ought to follow it. Let's put down our anime, and obey the Creator.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
