Komi Can't Communicate

Shouko Komi is a popular girl in high school. However, she has an issue: she has a severe case of social anxiety and is unable to communicate with her classmates. When Hitohito Tadano and Komi were alone in a classroom, Komi was forced to communicate with Tadano via the blackboard. After learning of Komi's desire to make one hundred friends, Tadano chooses to help her, becoming her first friend.¹

Immodesty

As with many rom-com anime, inappropriate clothing is found. It's not just short skirts, though that is part of it. There are other things in the show that are considered immodest.

"There's an episode where Komi and her friends go to the pool. Once the group of girls are changed into bikinis, 3 boys rate their bodies."

"A girl gives another girl a nude statue of herself"²

"Lots of cinematic shots of school girls' upper thighs in short skirts."³

This is not pleasing to the Lord. When God commanded women to cover themselves modestly, that does not mean that it's fine to wear bikinis or to be sexual in your dress! In fact, immodesty may be, and I believe it properly is, classified as the "attire of an harlot" mentioned in Proverbs 7:10. No person ought to be wearing clothes like that!

LGBT

On the topic of "sexual things," this show also promotes and portrays LGBT people. Common Sense Media tells us that "Teen girls and trans characters talk about getting sexually aroused".³ I believe this trans person to be the character "Osana Najimi" whose gender is "Unknown".⁴

The Scriptures teach that God made humans as male and female, and that has not changed. People are either male or female, and thus to go against that is wrong. The Scriptures forbid wearing clothes of the opposite sex (Deuteronomy 22:5), and also state that men are not to be effeminate (1 Corinthians 6:9). But this trans character violates both!

But that's not all! There is another character named Yamai who's a Komi-obsessed lesbian.⁵

"[28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; [29] Being filled with all unrighteousness ... [31] Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:" (Romans 1:28-29a, 31, emphasis mine)

The common belief amongst Christians is that "homosexual actions are a sin, not the desire." But that statement is contrary to the clear statement of Scripture in Romans 1. It says that the affection itself is considered a sin, which is evidence of those whom God has given over to a reprobate mind.

Kidnapping

Yamai, because of her obsession, ends up kidnapping Tadano. We are told:

"Tadano gets kidnapped by a girl who was obsessed with Komi and threatens to bury him at sea or in the mountains."²

In his first Epistle to Timothy, Paul begins a list of vices, stating who the law is for. One of the people mentioned in this list is "menstealers" (1 Timothy 1:10). It is a sin to kidnap someone. Yet, Tadano is stolen. Does this glorify the Creator, our God Jehovah?

Conclusion

Does this anime seem like entertainment that praises the LORD? Or does it sound more like a show that places evil things before your eyes? Obviously, it is the latter option.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
