Tomo-chan Is a Girl!

Tomo Aizawa and Junichirou Kubota are childhood friends.¹ Tomo is in love with Junichirou; however, due to her tomboyish ways, he merely sees her as another "one of the guys."² During their first year in high school, she confesses to Junichirou, who, again, does not see her in that way. Tomo is trying to get Junichirou to see her similarly.¹

Immodesty

This anime contains improper dress. Tomo, wears an extremely short skirt³ (if it can even be classified as a skirt), which is not how God would have it. It's supposedly "modest" simply because she wears shorts under,³ but those are also short! Additional immodest and "Sexualized Imagery"² includes:

"A character is shown taking a bath; most of her body is covered, but a...portion of her breasts are exposed. A male character grabs a woman's shirt, exposing a part of the woman's breasts."

This directly goes against what we know to be right and holy. The Bible tells us that women should be dressed in "modest apparel" (1 Timothy 2:9), but the anime portrays them immodestly. This is not glorifying to the LORD.

While one may try to say that Tomo is not dressed like a guy, the fact is, there's little that would actually make her "feminine." A "skirt" that hardly covers anything is as useless as a belt around your ear.

In this show, Tomo wears things that make her seem more masculine, which fits the overall "tomboy" aesthetic. Yet, Scripture is clear that there is a difference between men and women which ought never be overstepped. Jesus quotes Genesis when He says that God "made them male and female" (Matthew 19:4, Mark 10:6). Distinction exists, yet this anime finds it acceptable to violate this principle. Women are not to be masculine, men are not to be feminine!

Improper Language

Profanity is an issue with this show.⁴ God is very clear in His Word that He does not approve of such coarse language. According to the Scriptures, we are to "put off...filthy communication out of your mouth" (Colossians 3:8) and to let "no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth" (Ephesians 4:29). Lot was influenced by the corrupt communications of the city of Sodom—Peter attests to this in 2 Peter 2:7-8. What we hear does have its effect on us!

Violence

According to Crunchyroll, there is violence in this anime.² Yet, violence is not what we are called to. Time after time, the Psalms portray the violent as the enemy of God and of those who love the Lord. Violence is not a minor part of this show. "Do violence to no man" was what John Baptist told the soldiers (Luke 3:14). Violence is not Christian; it is worldly!

Conclusion

Do you really want to watch something that supports masculine women, profanity, and violence? What verse in the Bible says this is fine? There is none! Holy Writ reveals that he who "shutteth his eyes from seeing evil" will "dwell on high" (Isaiah 33:15-16). The question is: Do you want to dwell on high?

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
