Himouto! Umaru-chan

Umaru Doma lives a double life. On one hand, she acts like the perfect schoolgirl—refined and hardworking. However, on the other hand, she is a "lazy, junk food-eating otaku". Her older brother, Taihei is forced to do all the housework instead. Thus is the daily life of Umaru and Taihei.¹

Sexual Content

As with a majority of anime, there is "Sexualized Imagery" to be found.²  Girls are sometimes in short skirts. IMDb tells us that there "are some brief sexual innuendos" along with nudity.³ Women are seen in swimsuits, and a young man "gets stuck" on a pornography website, where, as you can imagine, immodesty is present.³

Our world has normalized public nudity; they've modified the definition of "nudity." Instead of nakedness being the waist covering the thigh like the Bible teaches (Exodus 28:42, Isaiah 47:1-3), they've redefined "nakedness," and thus the anime characters aren't "actually naked."

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Do you think God finds pleasure in His children consuming immodest content? Habakkuk 1:13 reveals that God is of "purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity"! If we are trying to conform to the image of Christ, we ought to likewise do the same.

Slothfulness

Umaru is very lazy and slothful. She lies around, plays video games (which are slightly violent³), and eats food. The Bible is crystal clear in its condemnation of slothfulness. The Proverbs contrast the slothful and sluggard with the wise one, the one who fears the LORD.

"[12] Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. [13] The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. [14] As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. [15] The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. [16] The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason." (Proverbs 26:12-16)

The Scriptures portray the sluggard, the slothful, as wise in his own conceit, drawing back to verse 12, which says there is less hope for him than for the foolish man. The slothful is the lowest of the low. Yet this anime not only shows it to us, but plays it off as somewhat funny!

Conclusion

This anime fails the test of Scripture. With its improper content, it is a wicked thing in violation of Psalm 101:3, which we are not to set before our eyes. Let's abstain from this filth! We should separate ourselves from media, like this particular anime, that fills our minds with things that are evil and sinful.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
