Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

When Ryuu Yamada entered high school, he purposed to leave his old ways behind and start anew. However, by his second year, he had grown bored with high school life, causing him to revert to his prior violent reputation. Going through his life, unaware that it's about to change permanently, he accidentally trips, causing him to fall into an honors student, Urara Shiraishi. Through this fall, the pair accidentally kissed, causing them to switch bodies. Learning that the two can switch bodies, Toranosuke Miyamura, a member of the student council, recruits them into the Supernatural Studies Club. Their goal is to find the "Seven Witches of Suzaku High" who gain powers via a kiss.¹

Witches

As stated above, the main objective is to find seven witches. Does this not already set off alarms in your head? Holy Writ contains commands regarding witches, and it's not to continue watching them work.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Exodus 22:18)

We do not live in the Old Testament period, however, God's opinion on witchcraft and those who practice it has not changed. There was a man in Acts called "Elymas the sorcerer" who is said to be a "child of the devil" and "enemy of all righteousness" because he tried to turn people away from the Lord (Acts 13:6-10). Do you think witches, sorcerers, want to bring you towards or away from God?

King Saul rebelled against the LORD. Because of this, he was removed from being king.

"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king." (1 Samuel 15:23)

The Prophet Samuel reveals that rebellion, the sin that caused Saul to lose the kingdom, is just as bad as witchcraft. That's a major sin if it leads to a loss of your entire kingdom! God takes witchcraft and witches seriously. It is evil, and Christians should have nothing to do with it.

Body-Swapping

This relates to the previous section, specifically the topic of witchcraft. It is demonic to even suggest that two people can switch bodies. In Genesis 2:7, we read of Adam's creation.

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Ibid.)

God placed us in the body He intended. To go against that, which I doubt is even possible, would be to say the Lord made a mistake. The Lord put you into your body, and it would be witchcraft to try (and fail) to do it.

Kissing

This show contains a lot of kissing² since the main gimmick of the show is that these witches' abilities are activated by a kiss. There are three types of kisses in Scripture: 1) general kisses, 2) kisses of deceit, and 3) kisses of the mouth. The general kiss is a kiss of familial kinship, for family or one who is close like family, though not related by blood (such as the holy kiss and kiss of charity). An example of a kiss of deceit would be from a traitor, chiefly Judas' kissing of Jesus. Lastly, the kisses of the mouth, found in one single Book of the Bible. In Song of Solomon, we find the kisses of the mouth three times.

"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine." (Song of Solomon 1:2)

This is the first mention of the kisses of the mouth, and actually where I got its name from. This is before marriage, and it speaks to the woman's desire for her betrothed. This desire is fulfilled later in two passages, after they've already been married (Song of Solomon 4:11, 8:1).

"Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman." (1 Corinthians 7:1)

There are ways a man and woman are not to touch before marriage. One such way is through kissing. The obvious example from the Cantica of Solomon reveals kissing on the lips, "of his mouth", is part of those things unmarried persons are not to do.

Immodesty

Crunchyroll lists sexualized imagery and suggestive dialogue as content of this anime.³ When Yamada switches into Urara's body, he goes to the female restroom and strips down to their undergarments.⁴ There are also bathing scenes.

"[9] In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; [10] But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

People should be dressed in a godly manner. When women wear immodest clothing, they are not wearing that which "becometh women professing godliness", but instead "the attire of an harlot" (Proverbs 7:10).

Conclusion

This anime has so many things the Lord does not approve of. As such, I would like to take a look at a passage from the Scriptures. The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel tells us the following:

"[9] And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. [10] So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about. [11] And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. [12] Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth." (Ezekiel 8:9-12, emphasis and underline mine)

In this passage, Ezekiel sees the elders of Israel in the house of the LORD. One of the abominations they were committing was putting all that wickedness on the wall. They depicted sin, and the LORD called it an abomination. Yet we think that it's fine to watch these depictions? What's different about the Israelite elders angering God with their portraits on the wall and you sitting "in the dark" and soaking in this wicked filth?

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Kenyon Bowers I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at wha...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Christian Anime Podcast Exposed

"Fiction doesn't condone sin." - Kenyon Bowers There is a YouTuber with a couple thousand subscribers known as "Christian Anime Podcast." He claims he is "The leading Christian voice on AniTube"¹ and promotes what he calls "Christian anime." However, there are some things we can learn and reasons to avoid him. This is not meant to just attack him personally, but rather to inform and to show the results of his stance. First , he labels wicked things "Christian." There are so many examples of this. I would like to reference a specific one, however. " That Time My Wife Reincarnated as an Elementary Schooler is a Christian anime."² What does he mean that such an anime is a Christian anime? Neither reincarnation/possession nor borderline pedophilia are Christian. This just shows he will label wicked things as "Christian" because "it has a good lesson you can get from it." If that's merely all it take...
