Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside

After being kicked out of the hero's party, Red spends his time in a peaceful town at the border of Zoltan where he can fulfill his dream: to live a normal life and run his own apothecary shop. He begins his peaceful life alongside his assistant, Rit, who gave up her life as a princess and adventurer to be with him. Unbeknownst to those around him, save Rit, Red's real name is Gideon, a former hero's party member, and the older brother of the hero herself—and this secret will come back to haunt him.¹

Immodesty

Scripture is clear about nudity and immodesty being wrong. After the fall, when man and woman realized they were naked, they felt a shame not known before. Paul, in Romans, tells us that the law is written upon our hearts:

"For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:" (Romans 2:14)

Even the natural man knows that we are not to be naked and expose ourselves. Yet, this anime, according to Crunchyroll, contains nudity.² The breasts of the main female character, Rit, are not covered properly. Both male and female immodesty is seen.³ Paul later tells Timothy that women should be dressed modestly and pleasingly to God (1 Timothy 2:9-10).

Magic and Demonic Activity

As usual, this anime, set in a fantasy world, contains magic and witchcraft.⁴ People often state that, "It's fiction, therefore the magic in it is fantasy and doesn't matter." The issue with this is that God never gives a different standard of morality for our lives and another for fiction. Witchcraft is forbidden time and time again by the LORD.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Exodus 22:18)

"[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)

It would be contrary to the Bible to be entertained by things worthy of death. Instead of stuffing our minds with evil, wicked, and demonic content, we ought to fill them with things that are conducive to the Spirit of God (Philippians 4:8).

Drunkenness

Additionally, people being drunk³ reveals that this is not a good show. Holy Writ is clear that drunkenness is not okay. Paul, when writing to the Ephesians, states:

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;" (Ephesians 5:18)

There is a dichotomy being used here. Either you are filled with wine or with the Spirit, it cannot be both. Either you are being led by wine (Proverbs 23:29-35) or by the Spirit. And if this show is displaying the opposite of being filled with the Spirit, then it cannot be good for the Christian's spiritual walk.

Conclusion

This anime is full of content that is in direct opposition to God's commands. Why would we cleave to evil when Paul commands us to "Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good" (Romans 12:9)? This anime is not good, and therefore we should abhor it!

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
