I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class

Saito and Akane are high-school students who absolutely hate each other.¹ They are forced to marry by their grandparents. The couple keeps their marriage hidden from their classmates and must learn to navigate their lives as newlyweds.²

Immodesty

As with many anime about high-school students, this show contains many immodest and inappropriate things. Short skirts are common, along with women's cleavages being exposed. There are bath scenes as well.³ The main male character imagines the main female character in a bikini, resembling a demon.³ Saito is sent scandalous pictures.³ Crunchyroll lists sexualized imagery and suggestive dialogue as content of this show.⁴ We know, from Scripture, that such clothing is not okay.

For example, Paul says that women are to "adorn themselves in modest apparel" (1 Timothy 2:9). If the Lord tells us that immodesty is wrong, why, then, would it be okay to watch it? It is not.

Alcohol Use

According to Crunchyroll, there is alcohol in this anime. Alcohol is contrary to the Scriptures and should not be in the content we watch. Proverbs 20:1 says:

"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." (Ibid.)

We should not be deceived by alcohol. We are not to look upon this sort of wickedness.

Profanity

There is bad language in this show. Perverse language is a breach in the spirit (Proverbs 15:4). What we say and what we hear matters. We should not fill our minds with terrible language, which this anime has. Lot vexed his soul with what he heard, not just what he saw (2 Peter 2:7-8). We shouldn't vex ourselves with what we hear, and the only way to do that is to avoid shows (and movies/games), such as this one, which have profanity in them.

Cheating, Deception, and Attempts to Cause Divorce

Akane's sister, Maho, tries to break Saito and Akane apart.⁵ Additionally, Himari, Akane's best friend, and Saito pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend, and they even kiss. This is done to keep Saito and Akane's marriage a secret, which is deceptive (and thus wrong, Proverbs 6:16-17). Himari intends to pursue Saito, despite him being married.

"Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." (Matthew 19:6, emphasis and underline mine)

This verse is about divorce, but it is relevant since Maho and Himari try to break the marriage apart. Cheating, emotionally, or through your actions, is not okay. The husband's body belongs to his wife and vice versa. This means cheating is just not alright.

Mock Quotes of the Bible

When Akane threatens Saito to keep their marriage a secret, he says, "O ye of little faith, huh!" Faith in what? This is a direct quote of Jesus (Matthew 6:30, 8:26, 16:8, Luke 12:28). Our faith should be in Christ, not in a random anime character. He uses Jesus' words, trying to tell Akane to have faith that he will keep everything a secret. Having faith in him cooperating in deception?

Undead

In this anime, Saito plays a game with zombies in it. The Bible lists necromancy as a form of witchcraft (and therefore, sin).

"[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, emphasis and underline mine)

When there are zombies, that's a form of necromancy. It is witchcraft, which is forbidden by several Bible passages, such as in Galatians 5:19-20. It is a work of the flesh; it is carnal. Christians are to have nothing to do with something demonic like this.

Conclusion

From these things, we can conclude that this is not an anime that Christians ought to watch. The sin in it would make it wrong to consume. Only a compromised Christian could see the things this anime has within it, and still think it is fine to watch.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
