Shonen Maid

After his mother died, Chihiro moved in with his uncle, Madoka. However, Madoka's house is a mess—there is dust and garbage galore. Chihiro, the clean-freak, will not put up with this, so be begins to work for his uncle to keep the house clean.¹

Alcohol

There is alcohol and drunkenness seen in this show. We are told:

"A character is very briefly seen pouring sake into a glass (it is implied that he and someone else [are] drunk, however, the actual drinking and consumption isn't shown)."²

This is in direct violation of Scripture. The Bible is clear that both of these things are wrong. For example, Leviticus 10:9-10 calls alcohol unholy and Ephesians 5:18 says drunkenness is wrong.

Shorts

Chihiro's shorts reveal part of his thighs. Thankfully, it was not done in a sexual way, however, it is still immodest. According to Exodus 28:42, nakedness (even on men) is from the waist and includes the thighs (basically waist to knee). Thus, Chihiro is not properly dressed.

Effeminate

In the show, Chihiro wears a maid uniform³, a maid's apron. Additionally, Madoka Takatori is effeminate. This is not okay.

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind," (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Feminine men are not alright. It is a sin according to this verse. Thus, we should not watch a show containing such.

Ancestral Spirit

In the final episode, Chihiro's mom comes back as a spirit to visit him and ask what has happened in his life since her death. This reflects the Shinto religion of Japanese culture. Communication with the dead is forbidden by Scripture (1 Samuel 28:13-18).

Conclusion

As we can see, this anime is not within the biblical standards we've been given by God. The Lord says that we aren't to set wicked things before our eyes (Psalm 101:3).

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide.
