Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World

This anime is about a guy named Subaru who, when leaving a store, finds himself transported to another world.¹ He is attacked by some thugs¹ but a lady saves him². This woman, named Satella, had her insignia stolen, and she is searching for the thief.¹ Subaru decides to help her, that is until they are attacked and subsequently killed.² That's when Subaru's ability, "Return by Death" activates, reversing time to an "an unspecified, unpredictable, and uncontrollable 'save point' set some time before his death".³

Inappropriate Clothing

Several women in this show have exposed cleavages and/or thighs. Other inappropriate things include:

"One female antagonist wears a very revealing outfit."

"Maid character strips naked to turn into a beast, only slight nudity is shown"

"Emilia is seen naked frozen in ice"⁴

Do you believe God would be fine with His children watching these things? He says that women are to be modest.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

The Bible is clear that women are to be modest; immodesty is not okay.

Magic, Witches, and Spirits

There is a lot of magic⁵ and spirit activity in the anime. One example is a character who communicates with spirits and has a familiar spirit.⁷ There are also witches. All of these things are wicked in God's eyes.

"[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)

It is clear that these things are wrong. Communicating with spirits is wrong. Witches and witchcraft are wrong.

Murder

A major part of this show is murder. The protagonist is killed many times.

"A teen boy dies in several, often brutal ways. Such as getting stabbed, getting sliced open, decapitated, freezing to death, and getting his head smashed."

"A character is tortured and then left in a mess, with both arms and legs mangled and broken."

"A teen boy commits suicide by stabbing his neck with a knife"

This is not okay. The Bible is clear that we are not to kill (Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17). The LORD is not fine with us viewing such wicked things.

Language

The people in this anime use improper language. The Bible is clear that a perverse tongue is a breach (i.e., a cut) in the spirit (Proverbs 15:4). If we want to not vex our souls by what we hear, we need to avoid shows like this, which contain profanity.

Alcohol

People are seen drinking alcohol. In the OVA episode Memory Snow, "some of the characters get drunk." We know that this is not okay or righteous. The Bible calls alcohol unholy (Leviticus 10:9-10), and drunkenness is forbidden many times over in Scripture. Here's one passage:

"Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying." (Romans 13:13)

We should not be drunk. It is sinful and unholy. May we put away these things from before our eyes!

Gods and Devils

Subaru says that "Gods generally don't do anything, but demons will laugh along when you talk about future plans."⁹ Mocking the idea of gods doing anything (even though we know that the one true God, the God of the Bible, is involved in human affairs) and instead lifting devils up. Even the characters Ram and Rem are oni¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾ (a type of demon from Japanese mythology).

Transvestism

One of the characters, Felix, is a male. However, he wears dresses and is super feminine.¹² This is not right.

"¶ The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God."

Such behavior is contradictory to Scripture. Additionally, the Bible is clear that men who are effeminate are in sin (1 Corinthians 6:9).

Conclusion

Is it not clear enough that this show violates the Bible on many accounts? Why, then, would we fill our minds with the content we find in it? Remember, once you see something, you can never unsee it.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Christian Anime Podcast Exposed

"Fiction doesn't condone sin." - Kenyon Bowers There is a YouTuber with a couple thousand subscribers known as "Christian Anime Podcast." He claims he is "The leading Christian voice on AniTube"¹ and promotes what he calls "Christian anime." However, there are some things we can learn and reasons to avoid him. This is not meant to just attack him personally, but rather to inform and to show the results of his stance. First , he labels wicked things "Christian." There are so many examples of this. I would like to reference a specific one, however. " That Time My Wife Reincarnated as an Elementary Schooler is a Christian anime."² What does he mean that such an anime is a Christian anime? Neither reincarnation/possession nor borderline pedophilia are Christian. This just shows he will label wicked things as "Christian" because "it has a good lesson you can get from it."
