Oshi no Ko

This anime starts with an idol named Ai, a doctor named Gorou Amamiya, and his patient Sarina. Ai takes a break from being an idol because she's with child. Gorou dies and is reincarnated as a child of Ai, alongside Sarina, who is now named Ruby. Aqua (Gorou's new name) begins to live once more, this time as an idol's son.¹

Immodesty

Short skirts are common throughout this anime. Thus, thighs are obviously exposed. Cleavage is sometimes seen. There is also a breastfeeding scene where you can, obviously, see a lot of Ai's breast. Additionally:

"A character is only wearing underwear for half of [an] episode."²

This is not modest. The Lord calls this sin. The Bible teaches us that women are to dress modestly. Do you think that anime with such content is pleasing to God?

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Let us heed the Scriptures! This media is wicked.

Life Begins...At Birth?

Ai goes to the doctor due to being with child. The doctor she sees is Gorou (who would later be reincarnated as Aqua). Do you notice anything strange about this? If Ai is already with child, how can Gorou be one of those two children? Well, life begins at birth apparently.

Yes, this show teaches life begins at birth. While Ai does decide to keep the babies despite the issues it could (and would) cause her, she doesn't abort them simply because she wants a family. It's not because they are humans with souls and intrinsic value. This is wicked.

"[13] For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. [14] I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. [15] My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth." (Psalm 139:13-15)

The psalmist ascribes personhood to himself even when he was in the womb, when he was being "curiously wrought" in the womb. Life begins at conception:

"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)

"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." (Matthew 1:23)

Notice that when Matthew quotes Isaiah, it speaks of her being with child, but in Isaiah it says "conceive". Clearly, a woman becomes "with child" the moment a baby is conceived. Personhood begins at fertilization.

Murder

Gorou is murdered "by a stalker of Ai".³ Ai is later murdered by an obsessed fan because he was angry she had children.⁴ Murder is wrong. "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17) is what God tells us. Such killing is wrong, and we shouldn't watch such things.

Language

There isn't much, but there is some language in the show.² Paul states that a "little leaven leaveneth the whole lump" (Galatians 5:9). Just a small amount of sin still takes its toll on you.

Blasphemy and False Gods

Speaking of language, this anime takes the Lord's name in vain. Aqua also pretends to be a "messenger of god"⁵ (which he is not). Ruby claims to be the "incarnation of Amaterasu"⁵, the "goddess of the sun in Japanese mythology."⁶

Ai says, "Idols are objects of worship, you know? They sparkle through the magic of lies".⁷ Ai is setting up idols as their own little gods. So not only do they take the Lord's name in vain, but they even mix in Japanese mythology (even "jokingly") and make themselves gods.

"And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt." (Jeremiah 25:6)

This show is utterly wicked for putting man in God's stead. This is exactly what happened in the garden, "ye shall be as gods" (Genesis 3:5)!

Alcohol

This show also has some alcohol in it. We read:

"Multiple characters are seen drinking and smoking."

"Drinks are shown in a TV Show that Aqua acts in."²

The Bible is clear that wine is not to even be looked at (Proverbs 23:31) because it is unholy (Lev 10:9-10). Alcohol is not alright, and we ought not watch this show because of it.

Lying

This show openly sanctions lying. Here are a few quotes from the show:

"Lying is fine. In fact, pretty lies are what fans want. Lying is a talent. It’s all good. Go on and lie up a storm"

"Lies are the most exquisite love!"

Lying is love? Lying is fine? No it's not! God is love (1 John 4:8) and God hates lying. To say lying is love is completely wrong and wicked. Lying is something God says is an abomination to Him (Proverbs 6:16-17). This anime promotes abomination.

Perversion of Heaven, Denial of Hell

When Gorou is reincarnated as Aqua, he says:

"I always thought someone like me would go to hell once they died. But…Once I woke up, I was in heaven."⁵

This "heaven" he refers to is being Ai's child. He says he thought he would go to hell, but doesn't, which is a roundabout way to deny hell's existence. I think the rich man would disagree (Luke 16:22-23).

It is also a perversion of heaven to equate being an idol's child with God's dwelling place. It's a complete twisting of the biblical understanding of the afterlife—as if the reincarnation aspect didn't already prove that.

Conclusion

We can see that this anime is not anything the Lord would have us to watch. There is just thing after thing that is wrong and sinful to be found within. Let's obey the Bible and avoid this show.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
