My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

This show is about a "narcissistic and semi-nihilistic"¹ man named Hachiman who, due to writing an essay mocking modern society and its relationships, is forced to join the Volunteer Service Club.¹ This club only had one other member, Yukino, and they must help solve other students' problems.¹

Immodesty

Female characters wear short skirts. There is also cleavage shown.² This anime contains "a few choice swimsuit fan shots as well as one [undergarment] shot".³ This is not okay. Immodesty is not good and it is sinful.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

The Lord does not approve of such things as this anime shows. We ought, then, to avoid it.

Homosexuality and Effeminacy

IMDb writes that a "character often gets a nosebleed when...seeing any homosexual activity occurring."² Homosexuality is wrong, and yes, even the attraction is too. In Romans 1, we read this:

"[28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; [29] Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, [30] Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, [31] Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: [32] Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." (Romans 1:28-32)

It speaks of those "without natural affection" in the middle of the vice list. Additionally, one character, Saika Totsuka, is effeminate.⁴ Because of this, he often gets mistaken for being a girl. This is utterly wicked. Men are supposed to be men!

 "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind," (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Do you really think God is okay with this?

Drunkenness

There is drunkenness to be found in this show.

"A character is seen drunk in some scenes."²

Drunkenness is sinful. The Bible says for us to "be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess" (Ephesians 5:18). Alcohol is unholy (Leviticus 10:9-10).

Language

There is a little language in the anime as well.² Jesus' name is thrown into a song but not "used correctly".³ Throwing God's name out like this, flippantly, is wrong.

"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (Deuteronomy 5:11)

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." (Ephesians 4:29)

We know that profanity and taking the Lord's name in vain are both wrong and sinful, so why would we watch shows that commit those sins?

Conclusion

This anime is not Christ-honoring. Us Christians should recognize this and choose to please God rather than ourselves.

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide.
