How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

The gamer, Takuma Sakamoto, plays an MMORPG called Cross Reverie. His character is known as Diablo. Takuma is teleported to another world in which he has the appearance of Diablo. His summoners, Rem and Shera, try and cast an enslavement spell upon him, only for it to be redirected and placed upon them.¹

Immodesty

I am not exaggerating when I say that this anime contains lots of immodest and inappropriate content. Most women in this show are dressed improperly, whether that's because their cleavages or their thighs are exposed, or both. It's so bad that even Crunchyroll lists it as 16+ (should be 18+, in my opinion) for "Nudity, Sexual Violence, Sexual Content, [and] Suggestive Dialogue".² Some of the things in this anime include:

"[The] Demon Lord often fondles girls' breasts, a lot of innuendo around magical reading."

"In an episode[,] some girl characters are shown in nothing but their panties and their hand covering their nipples."

"During one of the rituals involving a female fingers become insertive into privates, nothing is shown but it's very sexualized from wording voices and angles."³

I really don't believe I need to explain to Christians as to why exactly this is wrong. We know that the Bible explicitly forbids immodesty.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

This show crosses this line time and time again. It is rebelling against the morals God gives us in His Word.

Alcohol

We are told that this anime contains alcohol as well as drunkenness.³ The Bible is very clear that alcohol is wrong (Leviticus 10:9-10) as well as drunkenness.

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;" (Ephesians 5:18)

Since drunkenness is wrong, it would make sense that it is also wrong to intentionally put it before our eyes as well.

Magic

There is magic to be found in this show. The Bible is clear, however, that witchcraft is wrong.

"[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies," (Galatians 5;19-20, emphasis mine)

This passage shows us that God considers witchcraft a sin. Why, then, would we fill our minds with it?

Demon Lord

"Diablo" is a Spanish word meaning "devil." For example, Matthew 4:1 in the Reina Valera Gómez Bible translation says "...para ser tentado por el diablo" (underline mine). Additionally, Diablo is called a "demon lord." Do you think this is pleasing to God?

"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:21)

Thus, if we cannot partake of both the table of God and of devils, we must choose one or the other. We ought to choose God and reject this show.

Conclusion

As we can see, this anime is not biblical. It is perverted and contains magic and other things that displease Jehovah. May we avoid such things as this show. It is not right or proper. We are to grow in our spiritual life, which requires dying to self and putting on the new man. The new man does not put these things into his mind.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
