High School DxD

This anime is about a pervert, Issei, who asks a girl out—only for her to kill him. However, Issei is resurrected as a devil by Rias Gremory. She recruits Issei into the Occult Research club. Issei must learn to fight in order to survive in this new life of his all while keeping everything a secret from his family and friends.¹

Nudity

This anime is probably about as far as you can get before straight up calling it hentai. It is right there on the line between ecchi anime and hentai. It's so bad that Crunchyroll (which generally puts ecchi anime at 14+ or 16+) puts it at 18+.² IMDb lists several things that this show contains:

"There are a TON of bare breasts and buttocks [seen] in each episode"

"One of the main characters, Rias Gremory, always sleeps naked and when Issei wakes up, her [breasts] and nipples are in view."

"In the outro, there are girls gyrating in lingerie and pole dancing."

"A female character wears a [skimpy] costume, revealing her breasts and buttocks."

"There is frequent sight of [naked young] women, including full close-up shots of bare breasts and buttocks."³

Is this okay? No, it's not. The Bible is clear as to what is nakedness. In Isaiah 47:1-3 (for females) and Exodus 28:42 (for males), the Bible describes nakedness as the waist covering the thigh (i.e., waist to knee). Therefore, when characters are violating this principle, it is wrong. The Bible says for women to be modest.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

We should not put these immodest things before our eyes. It is wrong, according to the Scriptures. Why would we, as Christians, watch and consume sinful media?

Language

Bad language is found in this anime as well.³ Lot, Abraham's nephew, "in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul" (2 Peter 2:8). When we fill our minds with profanity like this, we begin to vex our souls, which is not alright. Since profanity is a sin (Colossians 3:8, Ephesians 4:29, etc.), we can conclude that we are not to watch anime containing such language.

Alcohol

"One character is usually drinking, whilst another is shown to get drunk off of one round of sake."³

Is this okay? No, of course it isn't! The Word of God tells us that alcohol is unholy (Leviticus 10:9-10). Even in Proverbs 31:4, it says:

"It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:" (Ibid.)

According to Revelation 1:6, we are "kings and priests unto God". This means that we aren't to drink since it is not for kings. We are also explicitly told to look "not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright" (Proverbs 23:31). Christians should not be looking at alcohol.

Devils and Resurrection

In this show, there are three main factions: fallen angels, angels, and devils.⁴ First off, biblically speaking, the fallen angels are the devils, but I digress. We are told that "Issei is killed by 'Yuma' (Raynare the Fallen Angel) and revived by Rias Gremory as a Devil"⁵. Additionally, there is the

There is so much to unpack with this. Necromancy is wrong. If one is dead, you are not God, you aren't to try and resurrect them! The Bible explicitly forbids necromancy.

"[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, emphasis and underline mine)

Necromancy is considered a form of witchcraft. Because of this, we should not be consuming this sort of content that fills our minds with such things.

Magic and the Occult

On the topic of witchcraft, there is other magic in this anime.⁶ We also find that Issei is part of the Occult Research club.¹ The occult is witchcraft and demonic. As the verses above state, witchcraft is wrong. However, this is not all the Bible has to say on the topic. In 1 Samuel, we find the phrase "the sin of witchcraft" (15:23), and it is one of the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21).

God Died?

According to the High School DxD Wiki, "Kokabiel revealed that God of the Bible and the original Four Great Satans were killed in the Great War."⁷ Additionally, there are many "gods" in this show, taking a more mythical approach that says gods can die.⁸

However, we know that God cannot die (i.e., cease to exist) as He is the only immortal One (1 Timothy 6:16). Additionally, there are no other gods besides the LORD.

"¶ I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:" (Isaiah 45:5)

It is great wickedness to say there are other "gods" beside the one true God. Therefore, this show is in violation of many verses and of being pagan. There is an example of this in Scripture.

"[29] Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. [30] And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, [31] And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. [32] So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. [33] They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. [34] Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;" (2 Kings 17:29-34)

It says that they "feared the LORD" in verses 32 and 33, but verse 24 says they did not fear the LORD. Verses 30 and 31 list the gods they worshipped beside Jehovah God. When you add the God of the Bible and false gods, you have a "fear" of Jehovah, but never a true fear of Him. It is wicked to put the LORD on a shelf with other so-called gods.

Conclusion

Does this seem like a Christ-honoring or godly show? Based on what I have revealed, it is clearly not. Because of this fact, Christians should not watch this anime. We are to be careful about what we allow to fill our minds. As the old song says, "Oh be careful little eyes what you see"!

Against Anime

180AD "Against Heresies" - Irenaeus 2025AD "Against Anime" - Kenyon Bowers I believe watching most, if not all anime, to be sinful. One may ask how I can make such a brazen statement. That's what this essay is for; I'd like to explain my case against anime. What is Anime? We must first define "anime." Anime, as I have gathered, refers to animation originating from Japan. This means that American cartoons (even if they look like anime) are not considered proper anime. Now, there's a little nuance as some consider donghua (Chinese animations) and Korean animations to be anime, while others make distinctions. For the purpose of this blog, we go with the latter definition which excludes donghua and Korean animation (though there is sometimes overlap). Thus, the running definition for anime I've come up with is: Anime , noun : Animation originating from Japan.  Why is Anime Bad? Now that we have a definition for anime, let's look at wha...

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Christian Anime Podcast Exposed

"Fiction doesn't condone sin." - Kenyon Bowers There is a YouTuber with a couple thousand subscribers known as "Christian Anime Podcast." He claims he is "The leading Christian voice on AniTube"¹ and promotes what he calls "Christian anime." However, there are some things we can learn and reasons to avoid him. This is not meant to just attack him personally, but rather to inform and to show the results of his stance. First , he labels wicked things "Christian." There are so many examples of this. I would like to reference a specific one, however. " That Time My Wife Reincarnated as an Elementary Schooler is a Christian anime."² What does he mean that such an anime is a Christian anime? Neither reincarnation/possession nor borderline pedophilia are Christian. This just shows he will label wicked things as "Christian" because "it has a good lesson you can get from it." If that's merely all it take...
