An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride

This anime is about a sorcerer named Zagan who finds himself going to a slave auction. While there, a young elf woman is put up for auction. Zagan is taken aback by her beauty and buys her. The show is mostly about the romance between these two, Zagan and the lady, Nephelia (Nephy for short).

Inappropriate Content

Nephy is seen in a provocative outfit when at a clothing shop. "Nephy is asked to try on a sequence of revealing outfits."¹ Additionally, one woman's dress is ripped open, revealing her cleavage and upper undergarments.¹ Crunchyroll lists the show as 14+ for "Sexualized Imagery" and "Suggestive Dialogue".²

This is not what Christians ought to watch. "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump", Paul says (Galatians 5:9). We should avoid this sort of content. The Bible is clear that women are to be modest.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

This is quite clear. We shouldn't be filling our minds with this sort of wicked content.

Alcohol

We are told that the "sorcerers and townsfolk drink alcohol, with some drunkenness."¹ This is contrary to what the Bible teaches. As we find in Ephesians:

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;" (Ephesians 5:18)

Are alcohol and drunkenness what God wants us to fill our minds with? Do you think we ought to be watching this stuff, especially when the Bible explicitly says not to even look upon wine (Proverbs 23:31)?

Long Hair

Zagan and his friend Barbatos have long hair.³ Now, I doubt that either of them were in the Old Testament or Nazarites. The only ones biblically allowed to have long hair outside of women were the Nazarites. As Paul states:

"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (1 Corinthians 11:14)

It is obvious to us that they were not Nazarites because Nazarites were not to eat or drink anything coming from grapes (Numbers 6:2-4), yet both Zagan and Barbatos drink.

Sorcery

There is magic in this anime.¹²³ Zagan, as a sorcerer²³, obviously uses magic. He even creates his own spells. Nephy is also a magic user,⁵ and various other sorcerers are shown throughout the show. Sorcery is shown in a good light.

Zagan's cloak has the all-seeing eye on the front. Now, we know that this symbol is used by Freemasons and dates back to ancient Egypt. We know he is involved in some pretty esoteric things. The LORD does not approve of such wickedness.

"[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer." (Deuteronomy 18:10-11)

We see that so many forms of magic are forbidden here. Do you really think magic is what we should watch?

Archdemon

Speaking of sorcerers, the highest rank is "archdemon." Zagan manages to become an archdemon.³ The fact that he is called an archdemon underscores just how demonic his powers truly are. A demon is summoned in the show, and it obeys Zagan because of his status as an archdemon.

"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:21)

Conclusion

I think we have seen that this show is not one God would approve of. It is obvious this anime contradicts the Bible.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
