Am I Actually the Strongest?

This show begins with a man who is teleported away from his apartment. He meets a goddess who grants him a second life. Thought to be weak, he was abandoned by the king and queen—his parents in this new word. Left in the woods, he is found by a fenrir named Flay who devotes herself to him. He is adopted by Gold Zenfis who finds Haruto and Flay in the woods.¹

Immodesty

In this anime, women's cleavages can be seen. There is "Sexualized Imagery" as well.² One of the main female characters is seen naked after transforming into a humanoid form, as well as wearing a tight black suit.³ We are also told:

"A woman is forced to strip and dance for nobles. She is shown in just [undergarments], with her arm covering her breasts."³

Is this what God would have us watch? No, I don't believe so, and the Bible confirms such. Paul, under the inspiration of God, calls immodesty wrong.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" (1 Timothy 2:9)

Because of this, why would we fill our minds with immodest pictures? Once one sees something, they cannot unsee it. Thus, we are not to watch this anime.

Pedophilia

When Haruto is a baby, he gets hungry. Fray offers to breastfeed him, but can't as she needs to "mate" first, and she asks him (remember, a newborn baby) to fulfill that duty.⁴ That's pedophilia! You can learn more about why pedophilia is wrong here: Anime's Unholy Fetish: No Innocence in Loli Culture.

Alcohol

Alcohol is used in this show.³ Due to this, we know it displeases the LORD. We are told to look "not thou upon the wine" (Proverbs 23:31). If we aren't even to look at alcohol, why would it be okay to watch an anime that contains it?

Magic

Additionally, magic plays a massive role in this show. However, from the Bible, we realize that magic (i.e., witchcraft) is unholy and sinful. Reincarnation is also not of God. In the Scriptures, we read:

"[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies," (Galatians 5:19-20, emphasis and underline mine)

Witchcraft is a work of the flesh. It is a sin. Fictional media doesn't make sin okay; thus, magic is wrong inside and outside of an anime.

False Gods

Before Haruto is reincarnated, he "appear[s] in front of a goddess"¹. Additionally, it "is revealed the measuring crystal only measures two digits; his power level is actually 1002, on par with a God."⁵ Man becoming his own god? Does that ring a bell? The serpent said, "and ye shall be as gods" in Genesis 3:5. The LORD is clear that He alone is God. No goddess and no man will take that place.

"¶ I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:" (Isaiah 45:5)

To claim that there is some "goddess" or that a man can rival God is blasphemous! We should not participate in consuming this media.

Conclusion

We can conclude that this anime is not one that God would approve of. It contains false, so-called gods and its content is far from holy. Why would Christ want His bride—the church—to corrupt herself with all this filthy content?

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
