Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian

This anime is about a guy named Kuze and a girl named Alya. The whole show is about her flirting with him in Russian while simultaneously unaware he understands Russian. There are many things wrong with this show.

Immodest/Sexual Content

First off, I'll get this out of the way, there is immodesty galore. Not only are the women in miniskirts, but, as the IMDb page states:

"A glimpse of a girl's underwear is shown."

"A character is shown changing in a fitting room. Bra and underwear shown but no nudity."

"Multiple characters are seen in swimsuits during the opening."

"A character accidentally touches a girl's crotch while putting on her socks for her."

"A character brings a magazine to school featuring idols in swimsuits on the cover."¹

As you can see, there is a lot (and the IMDb page has more) of perverted things in this show. There is a scene where Alya and another girl are hypnotized and begin to strip. This is not something that pleases God. We are told by Paul to think on things that are pure and lovely.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8)

As if that wasn't bad enough, the male protagonist's sister gets "excited" by incest and incestuous things. That is utterly perverted and degenerate.

"Kuze's sister gets excited about incestuous relationships in anime, manga, and real life. She initiates sexual scenarios with Kuze (e.g. straddling him in bed, tricking him into walking in on her naked after the shower)."²

That is disgusting and against the Bible. The Bible says in Leviticus:

"[9] The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. ... [11] The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness." (Leviticus 18:9, 11)

Mocking the Promises of God

There is a scene where Kuze sees Alya's undergarments. He later thanks her, saying, "I should be thanking you for giving me a peek into the promised land."³ This is mocking the land God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel!

"By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:" (Hebrews 11:9)

The land of promise (i.e., the promised land) is the land which God promised to give Abraham and his seed after him. To call female undergarments a "peek into the promised land" is to mock the LORD. Even the language, "a peek", could be seen as allegorical of Moses, the servant of God. He was allowed to see the land, but never to enter and help subjugate said land.

"Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel." (Deuteronomy 32:52)

This is great wickedness—to mock God's promise and God's servant, Moses. This is, by far, the worst part of anything found in the show. Note: This is found in the English dub/sub. The Japanese doesn't say "promised land," but it's still perverted.

Bad Language

Additionally, the show contains some objectionable language.¹ This violates many verses, but here are a couple:

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." (Ephesians 4:29)

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." (Colossians 3:8, underline mine)

We should not be filling our minds with this filth and ungodly language.

Conclusion

I think it is fair to conclude that this show is not one that Christians ought to watch, even if they want to. With it mocking God, the terrible language, and sexual undertones, it is only proper to recognize this as wickedness and sin.

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

For this anime, it was hard to pin anything down. Not because there aren't things in it, but because neither IMDb nor Common Sense Media have anything written about its contents. I had watched this show soon after it was released (yes, I used to watch anime) so most of what I say is based upon my memory, but I tried to find sources for accuracy. Ecumenical Christianity This show has many crosses throughout. Lawrence (the pastor) and Cecilia (the saint) run the church right outside their town. Due to the usage of "pastor" and "saint," the crosses, and the church looking like the average old-time Baptist church, many have claimed the anime as a "Christian anime." The term "pastor" is mostly associated with non-denominational and Baptist groups while calling someone a "saint" (in an unbiblical sense) tends to be Catholic and Orthodox. Additionally, the way the "church" in this world is, it is somewhat of an ecclesiastical hi...

Are There "Christian Anime"?

Are there "Christian anime"? Many anime-watching believers would affirm that there are. But what constitutes a "Christian anime"? What is the criterion by which we determine if something is Christian or not (e.g., anime, movies, video games)? Now, the term "Christian anime" is used, based on my personal experience, by a YouTuber Christian Anime Podcast , and those who listen to him. Whenever he says "Christian anime," what he means by that is an anime that contains Christian values. Thus, an anime may be full of idolatry, violence, and even severe immodesty, yet if it "teaches something" like forgiveness, it is called Christian. However, I would like to bring the Scriptures into this. What does the Bible say makes something Christian? What Does it Mean to be Christian? I find it appropriate to look at the first mention of Christians (by this term) in Scripture. In Acts 11, the believers at Antioch were called Christians for the first ti...

Beneath the Tangles Exposed

Within Christianity, there will always be those who compromise their biblical standards upon the altar of pleasure and entertainment. Just as this has been a struggle in the past, it is still a struggle for thousands of Christians worldwide. The creation of anime-supporting "Christian" media just adds fuel to the fire, hastening the destruction of the world under the pretense of "evangelism." On this note, I recently came across a Christian × anime group named Beneath The Tangles . This group supports anime, claiming one can "see God himself" through anime.¹ Their stated mission is: "Beneath the Tangles bridges the divide between anime fans and the Christian church by developing anime-related content and discussing anime and Christianity as expressed through anime, manga, and light novels; ministering to and loving Christian anime fans; and demonstrating faith by modeling Christ through interaction with our readers and followers."² They seek to p...
